CAPE TOWN — The city's digital nomad community was startled this week to learn of a march against immigrants, having assumed the category did not apply to them. Nomads, who are foreign nationals living and working in South Africa on tourist visas, expressed confusion, then relief, upon confirming the anger was directed elsewhere. "I thought we were expats," said one, from a café he has occupied since 2023. The march, which targeted Black African migrants specifically, passed the co-working space without incident. Attendees inside continued optimising their morning routines. The distinction, everyone agreed, was working exactly as designed.
